Photographer's Statement

'The Birds' is a collection of photographs in flight.
 
 
Bord have been a favourite subject of mine for a long time. This collection spans the last 14 years of occasional hours spent watching and photographing birds of all kinds.
 
 
I see birds in flight as one of the ultimate symbols of freedom and eternity. These images attempt to embody a manifestation of natures brilliance and the pinnacle of human spirituality.
 
 
These images are each fleeting frozen moments in time, often unseen by my own eyes. Occasionally when shooting I'd fire the shutter in reaction as a bird flees its perch, in that instant as light exposes the film, the camera's mirror flips up & blocks the viewfinder. So often, I never knew if I'd captured any magic until the results were processed!
 
 
This made the capturing of these images a journey into the unknown, a journey of excitement and exploration.
 
 
This exhibition is heart and soul material for me as a creative spirit. The works come from a place of my own instincts and intuitive creative desires, unadulterated by the needs of narrative or storytelling. A pure pursuit of a passionate love for photography. A craft which provides me with an ability to be expressive in a truly unique and individual way.

Mark Lapwood has been taking photographs since the age of 7, his professional career began at 16, working as a Press Photographer in new Zealand. He currently works locally and internationally as a Cinematographer.
